Who called me?
A missed call from a number you don't know. Here's how to work out what it probably was, in about a minute, without installing an app or handing your contacts to a data broker.
Step 1: read the code
The first few digits place the number. 01 and 02 mean a landline registered to a specific town, and our area code directory tells you which. 07 means mobile, except 070, which only looks like a mobile. 03 is an organisation. 08 and 09 are service and premium ranges, and a cold call from 09 is a red flag on its own.

Step 2: judge the call, and the code second
Caller ID is trivially faked. Scammers display real bank numbers, real council numbers, even your own number. So a lookup places the number; it can't vouch for the caller. What gives a scam away is the request: urgency, secrecy, payment, one-time codes, remote access, gift cards. A genuine organisation survives you hanging up and calling back on the number from its website.
Step 3: if it mattered, they'll try again properly
Genuine callers with something important leave a voicemail, send a letter, or use the app you already have with them. A silent missed call from an unknown number, especially an 070 or 09 number, is often bait to make you dial back a charged line. Curiosity is exactly what that trick prices in.
Step 4: report it

Why we don't show user-submitted reports on numbers
Plenty of sites let anyone tag any number as a scammer. Some of those tags are accurate. Others are wrong numbers, grudges, or spam, and an innocent small business can wear the label for years. We publish what Ofcom's register actually records, which company holds each number range, and we're straight about the limits of that. You get less gossip and more fact.
